On Lincoln's birthday, Dr. Richard F. Welch (PhD, Stony Brook University, retired professor of history) will examine the crucial role played by the Empire State during the Civil War, emphasizing Long Island's contributions. Beginning with an overview of the socio-political situation, Dr. Welch will discuss the key topics of recruitment, volunteering, contributions of Long Island troops, and the economic effects of the war on our area. He will also cover the convulsive draft riots as well as efforts by civilians on the home front to promote the war effort.
