 This class is intended to introduce the basics of public library administration to those working or seeking to work as small & rural public library directors, mid-managers or supervisors. The emphasis will be on day-to-day operations, challenges, and opportunities to provide excellent service to your community. Topics will be presented in an overview fashion, with the expectation that directors will continue to do continuing education throughout their careers.

Topics will include:
Brief history of libraries, VT laws and statutes
Role of the director, library trustees, staff, Friends
Policies and procedures
Budget, grants and funding
Intellectual Freedom & Confidentiality
Library Services: Youth, Adult, Special Populations, Outreach
Technology digital platforms, handling IT maintenance
Diversity @ the library
Professional library organizations
Safety at the library; disaster planning
Strategic planning
